Source: Democracy Now Sunday was World Water Day and marked the close of a week-long gathering held in Istanbul, Turkey to discuss water policy at a time when over a billion people lack access to clean water and 2.5 billion people lack water for proper sanitation. Activists from the People’s Water Forum, an alternative formation representing the rural poor, the environment and organized labor, slammed the official event as a non-inclusive, corporate-driven fraud pushing for water privatization and called for a more open, democratic and transparent forum. |

Source: Turkish Daily News , 24.03.2009 ISTANBUL - The 5th World Water Forum, which started last week with the participation of 155 countries, ended on Sunday with mixed conclusions as the final declaration of the ministerial statement did not characterize water as a ’human right’ but instead stated it was a ’basic human need’. While the 5th World Water Forum began in Istanbul last Monday with the aim of striving for clean water and sanitation around the globe and "bridging divides for water," the week’s events - especially the forum’s conclusion on Sunday - showed a significant divide in opinion. |

Alternative forum: Water a right |

Source: Turkish Daily News , 23.03.2009 ISTANBUL - The Alternative Water Forum wrapped up Sunday with a closing assembly after a full day of workshops, seminars and lectures espousing an alternate perspective on water management and policy.
The forum was organized as an alternative to the 5th World Water Forum, which took place in Istanbul over the last week. Bilgi University’s SantralIstanbul campus played host to the water dissidents for the last two days. The jam-packed forum schedule included lectures called Anti-Dam Struggles, Water Poisoned by Nationalism, Water as a Common Good and Water Management, as well as Water and Women. |

The forum, this year called "Bridging the Divides for Water", is expected to host a week of urgent debate. |
