8. edition of Munzur Culture and Nature Festival celebrated on 31 July - 3 August in Tunceli. Tens of thousands people attended the fest which hosted lots meetings, concerts and cultural activities. The fest ended with a huge finishing event: A demonstration with 3 thousands attendees with the 'Sun and Wind are Enough for Us'.
'Another Water Maganements is Possible Campaign' organized a meeting in the festival and distributed thousands of leaflets.
The rally ended in Duldultepe which will be under water if the planned dams will be built on Munzur River. The Mayor of Tunceli Local Government Songul Erol Abdil, Hasan Sen (Defend Munzur Council) and the Chairman of Human Rights Association Tunceli Branch Baris Yildirim made speeches in Duldultepe and said 'From Hasankeyf to Munzur No to dams'. The Festival started on 31th of July with an opening march from Kisla Square to Blue Bridge. Munzur Bicycle Team (the famous singer Ferhat Tunc was also in the team) started the ceremony. The opening events and concerts were held near the Munzur River. There were lots of events also in the main towns of the Tunceli city, in Pertek, Mazgirt, Hozat and Ovacik. There were two important meetings about water in the Festival. The first one was titled 'Dams, Golden Mining with Cyanide, Munzur and Alternative Energy Recources'. The discussion of the seminar focused on the destruction of the dam politics and the possible activities against the planned dams on Munzur River. The speakers of the seminar were: Prof. Dr. Ilyas Yilmazer (Van Yuzuncuyil University, Geology Departement), Cemalettin Kucuk (Head of Metallurgy Engineers Chamber and member of Steering Committee of TMMOB) and Necati Pirinccioglu (Keep Hasankeyf Alive Initiative). In the meeting which was moderated by Hasan Sen (TUDEF), Prof. Dr. Ilyas Yilmazer summirized the destruction of dams on these points: 1- Dams destroy the historical, cultural and social environment, 2- Dams effect the snowing regime and because of the reduce of snow, the soil erosion increase. 3- Dams destroy the flora (Keban example) 4- Dams destroy the grassy plains forever which were the base of civilizations (Mesopotamia) 5- Dams produce greenhouse gasses and increase global warming 6- The diseases caused by water increae (%80 on Dicle-Fırat river basin)
Necati Pirinccioglu and Hasan Sen told about the social and cultural effects of the planned dams on Munzur and Hasankeyf. Another important meeting about water was the 'Water Forum' which was organized by 'Another Water Management is Possible Campaign'. The meeting was held in a cafe near the Munzur River and moderated by Diren Ozkan (Keep Hasankeyf Alive Initiative) and Hasan Sen (TUDEF). There were lots of speeches about the problems linked to water including the speeches of Ozkan Tacer (Head of Defend Munzur Council), Baris Yildirim (Chairman of Human Rights Association - Tunceli Branch) and Murat Polat (Head of Democratic Society Party - Tunceli Branch). The main discussions were the problems caused by the dams and the drought linked to the global warming. In this respect, the global actions which will be on 6th of December in this year were munderlined. During the Festival, lots of 'Suyuma Dokunma' leaflets distributed in the stalls of TUDEF and Keep Hasankeyf Alive Initiative. |
